New rules for towing a trailer – update

As previously reported, the law regarding towing trailers is going to change later in 2021. It will mean that if you passed your car driving test from 1 January 1997, you’ll be allowed to tow trailers up to 3,500kg MAM without taking a car and trailer driving test.

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has more recently announced that the removal of the requirement to have the test to tow a trailer or a caravan with a car will not go through as legislation on 15 November 2021 as previously expected. To legally drive a relevant combination, drivers are still required to take a B+E test. The necessary legislative change is expected now to be made in the next few weeks. The removal of staged testing (B straight to C+E) will go ahead on 15 November.

Until the law changes, drivers must continue to follow the current rules about what they are allowed to tow based on when they passed their car driving test.
