Gliding Operations Safety Bowtie

A bowtie is a visual tool which depicts risk and provides an opportunity to identify and assess the key safety barriers either in place, or those lacking, between a safe and an unsafe outcome.

Gliding instructor Alan Swan has developed a bowtie for the RAF Gliding and Soaring Association that identifies the barriers that mitigate several gliding operations risks. While one or two of the barriers in the bowtie may not be relevant or feasible at civilian clubs, most are. The detail will be of interest to club Chairman, CFIs, and Safety Officers.
