CAA airspace policy developments

The CAA has recently published updated details describing its statutory duties and functions in relation to airspace change are contained in the Transport Act 2000 and the Civil Aviation Authority (Air Navigation) Directions 2023.

As part of its ongoing remit to integrate Remotely Piloted Air Systems (RPAS) in UK airspace, the CAA has published its ‘Airspace Policy Concept – Airspace Requirements for the Integration of Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) Unmanned Aircraft’. The concept utilises specific types of airspace structures to transition from segregated BVLOS operations, through the managed accommodation of a varied range of airspace operations, toward the ultimate objective of enabling integrated, unsegregated operations for all airspace users.
