Lasham Gliding Society Ltd – Deputy Chief Flying Instructor (Advanced)

Lasham Gliding Society Ltd is looking for an Advanced DCFI to augment our busy instructor team. The intention is to offer the position to an individual who could take over the post of CFI at the end of this Summer Season. The deadline for applications is 20th March 2024.

Lasham is the largest gliding club in the World. With a membership of over 700 people, Lasham boasts a sizeable club fleet of 16 gliders, 5 tugs and over 230 private gliders located on the club-owned airfield.

Located just to the South of Basingstoke (GU34 5SS), our modern club facilities are accessed easily from all directions.

Role Description: Reporting to the CFI, the DCFI (Advanced) will assist in managing the daily flying operation and carry out any additional duties from time to time that may reasonably be required. The Lasham DCFI (Advanced) is expected to have previous CFI/DCFI experience, and be able to:

  • Prepare and present the morning daily briefings as required, either in person or using the internet.
  • Supervise the running of the airfield and act as launch point controller as required.
  • Motivate club members to fly even when only a small part of the flying day is available.
  • Supervise all pilots ensuring they maintain the standards required whilst operating from Lasham, debriefing any transgressions / mistakes with the individual involved, reporting the issue to the CFI.
  • Deliver flying training and solo pilot supervision to Lasham members and on occasions, visiting pilots in gliders and TMG.
  • Deliver advanced cross-country training.
  • Co ordinate suitable instructor availability to ensure students are able to complete required check flights at the various check stages of their training (White Card/Red Card/ Bronze etc) in a timely manner.
  • Act as liaison between workshop and flying operations team in respect to glider availability and any unserviceability issues to include Flarm and Oudie updates.
  • Assist the office in determining booking availability based on status of fleet serviceability and administer booking changes if required.
  • Co-Ordinate with winch team for equipment and driver availability.
  • Liaise on a daily basis with 2Excel for jet movements and ensure all such jet movements are undertaken in accordance with laid down Safeguarding policy.
  • Run or assist various Instructor related refresher training courses.
  • Carry out Assessment of Competence flights as required in gliders and TMGs.
  • Run or assist with BI Coach training.
  • Run or assist Instructor courses as required on site.
  • Carry out TMG extension training as required.
  • Manage the winch team.
  • Manage any other instructors in the absence of the CFI.
  • On poor weather days carry out other tasks as directed by the CFI

Qualifications:
The following qualifications are required:
Minimum of either a BGA Full Cat Rating with MGIR stage 1,2 and 3 or Part SFCL FI(S) with TMG extension

The following qualifications are desirable:
BGA Regional examiner or Flight Examiner
Tug Pilot

Place of work/Working Hours/Holidays/Salary/Pension:
You will be expected to work from Lasham airfield, and occasionally from expedition locations. Core working hours are 0830 – 1730 – (40 hours) spread over five days a week although you would occasionally be required carry out some duties outside of normal working hours. Holiday entitlement is 25 working days plus 8 public holidays (or days in lieu). The position comes with a competitive pay (negotiable according to experience) and benefits package, a generous contributory pension scheme and a food allowance in the restaurant.

Lasham Gliding Society Ltd – Deputy Engineer /BGA Inspector

Lasham Gliding Society Ltd is looking for a BGA Inspector to augment our busy in-house aircraft engineering team.

Lasham is the largest gliding club in the World.  With a membership of over 700 people, Lasham boasts a sizeable club fleet of 16 gliders, 5 tugs and over 230 private gliders located on the club-owned airfield.

Located just to the South of Basingstoke (GU34 5SS), our modern club facilities are accessed easily from all directions.

Lasham Workshop.   The Lasham workshop is a 625 m2 purpose-built modern steel-clad hangar complete with professional certified paint spray facilities, tooling workshop and offices, with spare parts store, bonded store, and general storage available alongside the engineer’s office on a mezzanine floor.  Engineering staff consists of an in-place Chief Engineer (Senior BGA Inspector) and deputy inspectors, supported by an administrative assistant responsible for purchase of spares and consumables, ongoing workshop certification and maintenance of aircraft records (for our 2-seater fleet of Duo-discus, 5 ASK21s, 5 ASK 13s, club single-seat fleet of 3 Discus and 3 Astir / GROB single seaters, and a club Falke). Revamped considerably last year the well-lit and heated working floor space of approximately 500 m2 is split into 5 bays with ample storage areas and shelving for each.

Role description:   Lasham intends to expand the qualified aircraft engineer workforce and seeks an Inspector to assist the Chief Engineer in maintaining club  and possibly tug aircraft  Engineers are expected to:

  • ensure all practices carried out in the workshop are safe and H&S compliant.
  • ensure that the working environment is of a suitable standard for the planned work.
  • comply with the relevant regulatory, technical & operational requirements.
  • maintain the Club Fleet and when practical, privately owned gliders under the supervision of the Chief Engineer in line with aircraft operational requirements agreed with the CFI.
  • carry out unscheduled aircraft maintenance as reported by members instructors as efficiently as possible in order to maintain the required flying fleet
  • provide time & parts estimates to administrative assistant for both Lasham fleet and external work.
  • maintain work sheets for all work undertaken.

The Deputy Engineer would also be expected to take an active role in marketing and promoting the LGS workshop facilities to both the LGS membership and external customers.

Qualifications:

The following attributes or Qualifications are required:

  • BGA Glider Inspector:   ARC Signatory requiring CAA Part 66 L1/L2 license (or equivalent) for pure sailplanes only.

The following attributes are desirable:

  • Experience at complex repairs for which Lasham has the CAA List 1 status.
  • Self-Sustaining Sailplane – L2 Part 66 license.
  • Self-launching Sailplane & Touring Motor Glider – L2 Part 66 license.
  • Wood Repair – formal accreditation or rating, or evidence of suitable hands-on experience.
  • Composite Repair – formal accreditation or rating, or evidence of suitable hands-on experience.
  • Active glider pilot
  • Previous experience in a commercial aircraft workshop.

If not already qualified to maintain powered aircraft be prepared to work towards the relevant certification to allow tug maintenance in-house (have no restrictions on the Part 66 L2 ELA1).
