Non-Part 21 TMGs and pilot training
The BGA has engaged with UK CAA on the topic of non-Part 21 TMGs (e.g. some Falkes) being used for SFCL compliant training, for example SPL TMG extension training. The CAA has responded noting that it allows the use of UK registered aircraft holding a valid UK CAA issued National Certificate of Airworthiness with a mass of 2730kg or below for the purposes of flight training and relevant skill tests in accordance with DTO.GEN.240, and highlighting the need for aircraft suitability and DTO approval. Please note that this does not apply to non-Part 21 aircraft using a Permit to Fly, which currently may not be used for SFCL compliant training.
The BGA has updated it’s SFCL compliant training guidance published here noting that a TMG used for TMG training must hold either a valid ARC or NARC and be assessed by the BGA DTO as suitable for TMG training. Clubs or instructors can contact the BGA for advice and ‘approval’.
