Brian Spreckley awarded FAI Lilienthal Gliding Medal!
We are delighted to report that Brian Spreckley has been awarded the FAI Lilienthal Gliding Medal, which recognises a particularly remarkable gliding performance, or eminent services to gliding.
Brian Spreckley has served for many years as a National development coach, supporting elite and developing pilots across the UK. He pioneered the Interclub League, bringing competition to less experienced pilots, and established and operated the European Soaring Club, encouraging pilots to travel abroad and safely experience leading sites across Europe.
As an active competition pilot, he became a multiple National Champion and multiple World Gliding Championship podium medallist, culminating in becoming World Champion in the 15 metre Class in Australia. He continues to compete in Club Class in his Standard Libelle.
As UK IGC delegate, he was recruited to the IGC Bureau and has served for more than 25 years as Vice President under five Presidents. He has also served repeatedly as a highly respected IGC steward and Juror. Brian has led important and lasting initiatives including the IGC ranking list, Assigned Area tasks and the creation and development of the SGP.
Under his leadership and with continuing support from others, the SGP has reached its twentieth anniversary, strengthened sponsorship opportunities and showcased competition gliding at outstanding venues worldwide. His contribution was fundamental to the creation and continuing success of the SGP.
