IGC Approved Flight Recorders
Each type of IGC Flight Recorder has an IGC-approval document that gives details of the Recorder, its hardware, internal and external software and what devices can be connected to it such as displays.
Other Flight Recorders
Flight Recorders that are not IGC approved may be approved nationally, i.e. in the UK by the BGA. The small number of examples include FlywithCE.
Calibration
Flight Recorder calibrations for use in assessing FAI Badge and Record flights and for checking for airspace infringements in competitions must be carried out by persons approved by the BGA using approved equipment. Examples include individuals at Navboys and Bicester Aviation Services. Calibrations carried out by any laboratory approved by the Civil Aviation Authority or the Ministry of Defence for calibration of altimeters are also acceptable.
Applying for BGA approval to calibrate flight recorders
Application for approval should be made to the BGA and should include the following:
- A description and diagram of the equipment to be used.
- A copy of the applicant’s procedure for carrying out calibrations
- An example of the chart proposed for a Flight Recorder.
The submission should demonstrate an understanding of the requirements for accurate use of the equipment.
