Examiners
SFCL examiner guidance
SFCL examiners are authorised by the CAA.
New examiners are trained under arrangements agreed between the CAA and the BGA.
The examiner requirements are detailed in the SFCL.400 series.
There are four ‘levels’ of Flight Examiner (Sailplanes) as detailed inSFCL.415.
The BGA’s SFCL examiner standards document is here.
Qualifying as an examiner
FE(S) certificate initial issue or variation
If you believe you meet the requirements and wish to qualify as an FE(S), or if you wish to add further examining privileges (a variation) to an existing FE(S) authorisation, the required steps are:
- Complete and submit the BGA DTO FE(S) training application form to the BGA office. The BGA office will make the necessary arrangements. The application form is available below.
- Complete the FE(S) training. The BGA’s CAA-approved FE(S) training course programme is available below.
- Where required (e.g. initial issue of an FE(S) certificate), a Senior Examiner (Sailplanes) delivers the Assessment of Competence. The AoC is detailed at SFCL.445.
- Apply for the FE(S) certificate via the BGA. The application form for the grant of an FE(S) certificate initial issue, variation, revalidation or renewal is available below.
FE(S) certificate revalidation (i.e before the FE(S) certificate expires)
To support an FE(S) revalidating their examiner certificate, the BGA DTO will provide FE(S) Standardisation Refresher Training as specified in SFCL.460(b). This refresher training will consist of:
a. an examiner refresher seminar which will provide theoretical knowledge instruction for refreshing and updating the knowledge relevant to sailplane examiners, and;
b. within the last 24 months of the validity of the current examiner certificate, a demonstration of ability to conduct skills tests, proficiency checks or assessments of competence relevant to the privileges held, to a Senior Examiner (Sailplanes).
FE(S) certificate renewal (i.e. certificate expired)
To allow an FE(S) to renew an expired examiner authorisation, the BGA DTO will provide FE(S) Standardisation Refresher Training and assessment before they can resume exercising the privileges of their FE(S) certificate. This will consist of:
a. an examiner refresher seminar as specified in SFCL.460(b)(1) which will provide theoretical knowledge instruction for refreshing and updating the knowledge relevant to sailplane examiners, and;
b. an Examiner Assessment of Competence in accordance with SFCL.445, conducted by a Senior Examiner(Sailplanes).
Please note that an FE(S) certificate shall only be revalidated or renewed if the applicant demonstrates continued compliance with the requirements of point SFCL.410 as well as with the requirements of point SFCL.420(d) and (e).
