Examiners
SFCL examiner guidance
SFCL examiners are authorised by the CAA.
New examiners are trained under arrangements agreed between the CAA and the BGA. The training course is being developed and following CAA approval will be delivered under a defined process from early 2026 that will be detailed on this webpage . If you intend to train as an FE(S), thanks for your patience.
The SFCL examining requirements are detailed in the SFCL.400 series.
There are four ‘levels’ of Flight Examiner (Sailplanes). Please refer to SFCL.415.
The BGA’s SFCL examiner standards document is here.
Want to qualify as a Flight Examiner (Sailplanes)?
Please refer to the SFCL.400 series, and the BGA Training Organisation examiner standardisation course.
For initial issue of an FE(S) certificate, a suitably qualified FI(S) must complete:
- a standardisation course as detailed at SFCL.430.
- an assessment of competence as detailed at SFCL.455.
Further FE(S) privileges may be added subject to further experience and examiner standardisation training.
What is a Senior Examiner (Sailplanes)?
Senior Examiners (Sailplanes) are appointed by the CAA to carry out assessments of Flight Examiners (Sailplanes). The SE(S) requirements are detailed at AMC1 SFCL.445.
