Hill, ridge and mountain soaring

SPL training requires that the student pilots is taught one type of soaring, and in much of the UK, that is thermal soaring.

SPL holders invariably move on to try other types of soaring including hill, ridge, mountain, and wave soaring.

The BGA advocates that SPL holders are briefed and obtain relevant experience before trying other types of soaring for the first time. The SPL Theoretical knowledge (6. Operational procedures) and Flying experience requirements (ex 15) provide helpful basics.

Most expedition sites can provide detailed generic and local guidance and experience with a suitably experienced person. See also ‘Hill, ridge and mountain soaring’.
