Airprox update

The USAF in East Anglia operates a variety of heavy aircraft primarily into and out of Mildenhall. During 2025 there were three significant airprox involving gliders and USAF heavy aircraft in the vicinity of Mildenhall and the associated combined MATZ. The third airprox is currently under review by the UK Airprox Board.

It is of course imperative and in the interests of all BGA clubs and glider pilots to maintain safe shared airspace and to minimise airspace restrictions. In addition to the existing engagement between the BGA and USAF in the area, the BGA is developing a ‘USAF in East Anglia’ briefing resource for glider pilots and anticipates widening the BGA/USAF engagement with clubs beyond East Anglia.
