Fuel starvation

The CAA has reported that they have seen several recent accidents that have been caused by aircraft running out of fuel.

Pilots are reminded of their legal obligation to ensure there is sufficient fuel on board for their intended flight plus reserve. See Article 69 of the ANO, NCO.OP.125 and, for powered sailplanes, SAO.OP.120. Failure to do so may result in enforcement action being taken in the event of an accident or incident. The Skyway Code and Safety Sense Leaflet 5 – Flight Under VFR contain helpful guidance on fuel planning.

Pilots should physically check aircraft fuel levels, e.g. by using a dipstick. Know – don’t assume.
