Essex and Suffolk GC seeking new site
As also reported in the aviation press, the Essex and Suffolk gliding club has announced that it is looking for a new operating base after confirming that its airfield lease expires in September 2026.
The Essex and Suffolk gliding club is currently based at Wormingford Airfield (a few miles east of Earls Colne) in Essex. It is a vibrant club with over 100 active members and a recognised Junior Gliding Centre.
This year some of the club’s former and existing juniors are following their dream in aviation on apprentice schemes at Stansted Airport and some now working directly for the airlines based at the airport. The club also has alumni on the BA Captain Scholarships currently developing their skills in Florida. And they’ve just had one former student following his aspirations to be a competition pilot representing the British National gliding team this summer in Poland.
In September 2026 the lease on the club’s historic airfield will expire and is not going to be renewed. They club are looking for opportunities to hopefully lease or buy enough land (and preferably a former airfield) in Essex or Suffolk to continue the club’s operations. Any suggestions are welcome, though particularly useful if they also come with contacts of owner and operators of the land. The club notes that it is particularly open to mixed uses and other sports/aviation sharing of the space.
Please see the Essex and Suffolk GC website for contact details.
